About the course
CA Foundation as part of the revised scheme, has replaced the former entry-level test CPT (Common Proficiency test) introduced by the ICAI.
FOUNDATION is an objective type and subjective type test with negative marking. Conducted thrice in a year (JANUARY, MAY/JUNE, SEPTEMBER).
Foundation comprises four subjects
- Paper 1 : Principles and Practice of Accounting (100 MARKS)
- Paper 2 : Business Laws (100 MARKS)
- Paper 3 : Quantitative Aptitude (100 MARKS)
- Paper 4 : Business Economics (100 MARKS)
The first two are subjective while the latter two are objective. Negative marking is applicable in the objective papers.
Passing Criteria
A minimum of 40% marks in each subject and a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate of all the subjects.
Validity
After conversion to the New Scheme of Education and Training, your Foundation Course validity will be for 4 years from the first eligible attempt in the Foundation Examination.

Candidates who wish to pursue Chartered Accountancy Course can register for Foundation Course after appearing in the Class 12 examination.
Students after registration to the course are required to complete a minimum of 4 months study period from the date of registration in order to be eligible to appear in the Foundation Examination,
- Students registered on or before 30th June will be eligible to appear in November examination
- Students registered on or before 31 st December will be eligible to appear in May examination
ICAI has a centralised Self Service portal to manage the process of registration and submit self attested documents. Initial registration and subsequent administrative interactions throughout the life cycle of students covering Intermediate and Final courses are done through this portal and there is no need for personal visit or submission of physical documents.
Candidates has to visit https://www.icai.org/post/students-services for the process of registration. After successful submission of forms, the documents will be verified and registration will be confirmed by the Institute. Students will also be provided details to order study material through the centralised distribution system portal, i.e., icai-cds.org
